Lewis Grant
Past President
Lewis qualified as a Veterinary Surgeon from The Royal (Dick) Veterinary School in 1968 and worked in General Practice for over 3 years in Lockerbie before moving to a rural mainly large animal practice in North Yorkshire in 1972. He took the practice over with a fellow 1968 colleague following the sudden and unexpected death of the practice owner. They expanded the practice over a number of years and developed the small animal side. Lewis and his senior partner took an interest in Veterinary Public Health work in the late 1980s and was appointed POVS in the North Region of the MHS in 1998. When the FSA was established in 2000, he worked as HQ POVS and subsequently acted as Veterinary and Technical Manager for the FSA until retiring in October 2010. During this period Lewis did such work as developing the Manual for Official Controls, running the VETEC Unit in York and assisting the industry in dealing with the BSE and FMD crises. He was responsible for hosting foreign Delegations from the world over as well as organising the EU FVO Inspection visits to the UK. He also carried out Taiex work for the EU in pre-accession countries mainly in Eastern Europe. Lewis was awarded the MBE for services to the FSA in 2010.
Following his retirement, he continued to do consultation work in many countries including the UK, EU, the Balkans, Albania and Botswana.
Lewis joined the VPHA in the mid1990s and became a Council Member around 2004. He was proud to serve as VPHA President in 2015 and 2016 and currently serves as BVA Council Representative for the VPHA.
